after a 3 kilometer ride on my 7-speed bike i finally converted it into a single speed. it was relatively easy as the rear wheel have been prepared way ahead of time. the rear hub has been adjusted to give a chainline close to straight as possible even before the wheel was laced. all that’s needed to be done was transfer the inner tube and tire from the old to the new wheel setup. the front and rear derailer was removed along with their respective cables. and a new, shorter chain was installed.
the only hard thing i encountered was putting enough tension on the chain without making the chain look like a clothes line. the “after” photo still has the chain drooping a bit and was adjusted later in the day.
i noticed that after the ride my hands were not numb but was a little sore between the thumb and forefinger so i decided to try and levelling the bullhorns to see what effect that will have. i also felt that my seat height was low but i’d rather keep it this low until i regain more of my bike handling skills and slowly bring it back up to a comfortable height.
after the conversion the bike certainly feels lighter. i wonder if she’ll handle better as well. i’ll see soon enough.
