it is possible to have real and usable bike lanes here in manila. i will be the first to admit that it would take tons of re-adjusted discipline, a whole bit and a half of educating, a lot of time, political good will and more than a barrel full of money but it is possible.
to be usable, bike lanes cannot be in only one area or else it would simply be called a playgound. these lanes has to connect one place to another and to another so you can actually go from a to b or from the place you live to the place you work and vice versa.
efforts to incorporate bike commuting into people’s psyche and people’s lives has to be started now because it needed starting two years ago. and it takes a lot of time for drivers and people in general to be aware of and to respect bike lanes.
and please, please do not give me that “but-that’s-new-york-and-we’re-in-manila” excuse. that’s just plain lame. in case no one noticed, there are more people using bicycles to commute to work today compared to two decades ago. life’s just plain harder and commuting to and from work saves time and money. usable bike lanes would, hopefully, make the commute safer.
