diablo 2 on linux

i thought the installation disks of diablo ii were in san pablo but i found them here (so sorry bro, my bad) and since wine 1.1.0 has just been released (27 june 2008), i thought i’d give it a spin and install a windows game on linux. the latest available version of wine in the ubuntu repositories is version 0.9.59 (as of 01 july 08) — a little disappointing considering that 1.1.0 has just came out. a quick lookup in the application database at wine hq and i was able to confirm that d2 will run on this version of wine so i installed it anyway.
the installation process was surprisingly easy! i was also able to install the expansion pack and patches. the latest patch (112a) will not require you to have the diablo 2 cd on the drive while you play which is really nice since my station is a laptop and winding up the cd every once in a while to check if the d2 cd is there takes a little bit of power.
and does it run? you bet cha! there are some very minor quirks but i didn’t encounter any show stoppers. the next test is if i can run it on a network.
so what’s the big deal? think of an internet/gaming cafe that doesn’t need windows to run. how much will you save?

HAAAAY, naghanap pa naman ako dito at sa kabilang bahay.
Seeing the Diablo 3 site, and knowing it will be a while before it can be played (and might even require a bit of upgrade), I got the urge to play Diablo 2. Once you’re done, pahiram ha?
