from the philippine cycling network:

earth hourThe Chairman of the PTFCC, Hon. Angelo Reyes, and the Mayors of Manila, Pasay and Parañaque will turn off a giant switch to signal the start of the “lights off” at 8pm. We are hoping to have the fire brigade sirens to signal the beginning and end of Earth Hour as well.

The Firefly Brigade and all other bikers will be there to help in creating a festive vibe, grab the attention of passer-bys and encourage participation of establishments along the stretch of Roxas Boulevard . The Firefly Brigade will bike along the stretch of Roxas Boulevard, from Manila to Parañaque, from 7 to 8 pm holding Earth Hour flags and tarps and making reminder announcements over the firefly brigademegaphone about switching off lights for EarthHour from 8 to 9 pm. During the actual lights off from 8 to 9 pm, the firefly brigade can bike around the CCP lawn with blinking lights or glow in
the dark.

We are also happy to involve the Firefly Brigade in Earth Hour as this has an added benefit of highlighting the fun of non motorized forms of travel.

WHERE: CCP Lawn (in front of the Fountain)
WHEN: March 29, Saturday 6:30pm-9:00pm

THINGS TO BRING:
bikes (of course), helmets (for safety), water (hydration), snacks (for energy), lots of lights and blinkers, friends, smiles, laughter and a love for biking.

i’m not sure if i can go though. :( let’s see if i can drag the girlfriend and son along.

christmas 2007 in school fooling aroundhe turned 10 today. two digits. i hate to make it sound like a cliché but time do fly. a decade ago he was born premature — seven months and 3.75 pounds. now, he weighs almost 80 pounds. hopefully, one of these days, i’ll find him taller than me. ;)

another decade and he’ll be finished studying. and i’m sure time will also fly in the coming 10 years.

but today, he got the gift he wanted — virtue of mobile suit gundam 00 (japanese site). he also wanted exia but that sold out pretty quickly. ah well, next time.

that picture was taken last christmas in school. those other people are not real. ;) i’m not sure if they’re made of paper maché.

moa ride 0127its the holy week. people are out of the city. there’s very little traffic on the streets.

and she’s not here.

its tiring walking alone. bordering on boring. the pace gets unbearably slow.

because she’s not here.

it feels like i’m stranded. others pass me by. but i tread on.

even if she’s not here.

i look forward to the day when i see her again. soon.

kikay. my bike.

;)

trying, tiring and crazy fun

it has been a trying day. it’s what we call “visita iglesia” where you would visit seven churches from maundy thursday (evening) to good friday (3pm). we decided to start our visita iglesia on the morning of good friday. around 930 and it was getting hot already.

we start with 1. quiapo church. it took a long time to get there. traffic. when we got to the church, people wearing maroon and barefoot was crowding around it — devotees of the black nazarene. you couldn’t even step into the church because it was totally filled with devotees who would wave their white towels at the image of the black nazarene. amazing sight. we had to say our prayers beside the door of one of the side entrances.

a jeepney ride and short walk led us to the walled city of manila — intramuros. 2. san agustin church and the 3. manila cathedral is about a hundred meters from each other. san agustin dates back to the spanish times and is brimming with old world character. that may be one of the reasons why its so popular as a wedding venue. the manila cathedral dates back to the american period. it was more festive here. there were a lot of people but not as much as that huge crowd in quiapo. there were plenty of stalls on the sidewalks that sell native snacks and drinks as well as the traditional ones. i especially like the grilled bananas and squid. yum. ;) there’s this guy who regularly gives a walking tour of the walled city.

saint michaelafter a long walk through the old city, two jeepney hops through quiapo to san miguel, we arrive at 4. san miguel church — the church of the archangel with a sword. i stayed around this area for more than 10 years. the church used to be pretty active and well attended but something happened. there are much less people going there. still, they’re keeping it pretty well maintained.

after a short walk that takes us beside malacanang palace is 5. saint jude parish church. people come in droves to this church every thursday mostly to ask for favors from saint jude thaddeus. it seems to work because they keep coming back.

a 10-minute walk takes us to 6. san beda church. this is were i got married. beautiful, beautiful church and the monks have kept it well maintained. gothic.

the last stop is 7. santissimo rosario parish church located within the university of santo tomas (ust). this is also our parish church.

we finally finished at about 2:30 pm. sorry there isn’t much pictures i forgot my cellphone in the car. duh.

if for some reason the graphical user interface of linux doesn’t show up, try booting in recovery mode and run:

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

this will run a script that will allow you to setup your video card manually.

regionalizing youtube

video not availablei was going through the music videos that sonybmg posted over at youtube and i found an interesting one that i decided to view. upon clicking, i got the screenshot you see here saying, “this video is not available in your country.”

what the… ?

is this like a dvd region thing? that idea was stupid to begin with. it just inconvenienced the consumer and i for one didn’t get to buy an original dvd or two because it was some other region that my player wasn’t suppose to read. that’s lost income right there.

and now the stupid idea comes to the internet. i would understand it if the reason for it not being available is if it will compromise national security. dudes, its a music video. i’m not exactly sure if it will make a dent in philippine national security.

i got to see the video anyway. ;) the song is okay. the video wasn’t.
